Leleuvia

Another weekend has come around and we have spent it on the nearby Leleuvia Resort Island. It's mission is to be a fully eco resort and has lots of great ideas in trying not to spoil the reef and flora of the islands. The resort flora has been extensively researched tree by tree and bush by bush and there is a nice book published that details all the plants on the island and whether they are native or foreign in origin.

They also promote the corals, by growing coral 'plugs' artificially, these are then planted in a reef when they are a sufficient size. It's a really nice friendly resort with an all important well stocked bar!
All the bures have been traditionally constructed from local materials complete with palm frond thatching.
It is close to Suva and attracts a weekend crowd of ex-pats. There are also some tutors and researchers from the University of the South Pacific that come too. Its nice and convenient as there aren't many island resorts close to Suva.

The dive shop is run by Jim a Fijian of many talents, one of which is music. He recognised my Robert Cray tracks straight away when I played them on the dive boat going to a dive site. He looks after us when we dive and makes sure we don't drift off into the wild blue yonder. He his very considerate and sets our gear up for us and always makes sure Rhonda gets back into the boat safely. I am too concerned with just getting myself back in. Rhonda and I dived together yesterday and we had quite a fast drift dive and saw loads of great fish including some big lobsters and the odd shark. The boat is a lot bigger than the Caqalai bots so the back roll is a big drop. Managed to go off the back by doing a giant stride which made a nice change.
