Target Fish

There are hundreds if not thousands fish that inhabit the coral reefs around Caqalai and it is not possible to survey all the fish that inhabit the reef. Instead a selective group of species of the same genus are chosen. These are species that are thought to be key fish of a healthy reef.

They form part of the each survey and the data analysed over time is a reasonable indication of which way the reef is going in terms of health. similar surveys are carried out on invertebrates species and the benthic layer ( or as I like to call it the 'trainspotter layer"). The following fish are some of the target species.
The titan trigger fish below is not a target species but is pretty cool!

Levuka: Fiji's Old Capital

Levuka - on the island of Ovalau, off the west coast of the main island Vita Levu is the former Fijian capital. In 2013 it became the country's first world heritage site. It's also the place where the cessation document ceding Fiji to Queen Victoria was signed and was also the place where it was given back to the Fijian people when they gained their independence in 1970.

Beachcomber Island in the Mamanuca Islands

Almost at the halfway point now. Went to the Mamanuca islands this weekend. We hired a car than took a ferry, after a night in Nadi, to get to the islands on the other side of the main island Vita Levu. We stayed on Beachcomber Island and the diving was completely different. Nadi is the tourist hub of Fiji and it is completely different to Suva and the Lomoviti islands.

Leleuvia

Another weekend has come around and we have spent it on the nearby Leleuvia Resort Island. It's mission is to be a fully eco resort and has lots of great ideas in trying not to spoil the reef and flora of the islands. The resort flora has been extensively researched tree by tree and bush by bush and there is a nice book published that details all the plants on the island and whether they are native or foreign in origin.
