There are hundreds if not thousands fish that inhabit the coral reefs around Caqalai and it is not possible to survey all the fish that inhabit the reef. Instead a selective group of species of the same genus are chosen.These are species that are thought to be key fish of a healthy reef.

They form part of the each survey and the data analysed over time is a reasonable indication of which way the reef is going in terms of health. similar surveys are carried out on invertebrates species and the benthic layer ( or as I like to call it the 'trainspotter layer").
