In November I signed up for another sailing trip with Rubicon 3, this time from Vigo in Northern Spain to Gran Canaria. A 1048 nm trip which took 7 days to make the journey with another 2 days in in Vigo learning about celestial navigation. I have always wanted to try using a sextant. (one too many Patrick O'Brian books unfortunately)
We were placed in two watches of 5. Four hours on four off, was very tiring! our captain Patrick explained that with the bad weather and the sea state extreme sickness was probable! I thought he was kidding but in the first 2 days two of our watch were so ill they couldn't get off their bunks. The weather was either too windy or not enough. We skirted around the periphery of the weather system and arrived on time.
Thought the sextant work very difficult. But the night sky was absolutely amazing without any light pollution you get on land.
Our watch really gelled together, Martin and I especially as we shared a love of beer, which made going ashore memorable.
